SASSA Foster Child Grant is a social grant by SASSA that provides financial support to foster parents so that they can take care of their foster children. Its purpose is to provide financial assistance to foster children legally placed in the care of foster parents by the South African Child Care Act. The South African government has established this grant for children under 18 years. 

A foster child is a child who has been orphaned or abused and neglected by their parents. And because of any danger, the court has given such a child under your care. Foster parents are responsible for all the basic needs of the foster child. Such parents must provide all these basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, medical care, etc.

This grant is also for parents who need financial assistance to care for their foster child. If you are eligible, you can get R1130 per child from the foster child grant. 

Documents Requirements For SASSA Foster Child Grant

You must submit the original copies of the following documents to the SASSA Office when you apply for a child grant.

  • Adopted Child’s Certificate: If you don’t have a foster child’s certificate. You have to sign the affidavit from a known personality in your area.
  • If you are a refugee in South Africa, you must submit a reference ID that has been allocated to you.
  • If you are a resident asylum seeker, you will need this ID.
  • Your spouse’s identity documents should also be included.
  •  If your spouse has passed away, you must provide their certificate.
  • Your District Court order proves that you are the foster parent.
  • If you submit all these documents, then your application will be approved.

Eligibility Criteria For Foster Child Grant Application

It would help if you met these eligibility criteria before applying for the foster child grant.

  • To become eligible for the grant for South African residents and permanently recognized refugees,
  • You and your foster child both live in South Africa.
  • As long as you care for the foster child, he must remain your foster child.
  • If the child is orphaned, abused, and in danger, he should be under your care as per the court order. 
  • The adopted child should be less than 18 years old. A foster child’s parents must meet the requirements of the means test.

Application Process For Foster Child Grant

Suppose you want to apply for a Foster Child Grant. You can apply for a Foster Child Grant by filling out the application form at the Regional Office of the South African Social Security Agency near you. You must complete this application form in the presence of SASSA Officers and submit it back to the offices.

Then, you must attach the necessary documents when submitting the application form. Only then will your request be sent forward for full approval. After filing the application form, an officer will complete the full interview and take your fingerprint.

Reasons for Lapsing of Foster Child Grant

Your foster child grant will be suspended if you or your child meets the conditions below.

  • Your child’s poster child grant is suspended once your child reaches 18 years of age. If your child has turned 18 but is still studying in secondary or high school, the government will grant you a poster child grant until age 21. Also, if your child drops out of school and becomes able to earn, the grant is terminated.
  • Your grant may also be suspended in case of the death of your adoptive parents or the death of your foster child who was under your care.
  • Your Foster Child Grant may also be suspended if you have admitted your child to a state institution.
  • You can’t get a Foster Child Grant even if a court has terminated your foster care.
  • If you were living as a refugee and your refugee status was terminated
  • If you have not received the grant for more than three consecutive months
  • You have been out of the country for over 90 days without informing SASSA officials.

Foster Child Grant Review Process 

The validity of the court order in the foster child grant is about two years. SASSA reviews the grant every two years after the court order expires. This review ensures that the means test for obtaining the up-grant meets the criteria. Or has your situation improved or not because of the grant that is being given to you? This review is taken by SASSA so that if your situation has improved or, for some reason, the foster child has died. So SASSA information about it should be provided. Besides, you must submit the child’s annual life certificate and an eligibility report of your Mean test to prove your review.

Did You Know About Child Grant Payment?

R1130 is provided every month for a foster child grant by SASSA. If you have more than one foster child under your care, then this foster child grant will be provided to you twice. Apart from this, the SASSA Grant has announced that the Payment of the Foster Child Grant will be increased by 10 percent in April 2025.
