SASSA Care Dependency Grant is provided to children up to 18 years of age with severe mental and physical disabilities. It is a social grant whose main objective is to provide grants to parents of physically and mentally challenged children to help them provide basic needs and care for their disabled children.

Document Required For Grant Application Process

If you want to apply for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant, you must go to your nearest Social Security Agency office and bring the following items.

  • A medical report from a doctor confirming the disability of you and your child.
  • Have to provide your full proof of residence.
  • Proof of income must be provided. 
  • You have to provide information on your marital status.
  • Apart from this, proof of other assets is also to be provided. 
  • A three-month bank statement will also be provided while applying for the Care Dependency Grant.

Application Procedure of SASSA Care Dependency Grant

If you want to apply for this grant, you should go to your nearest South African Social Security Agency office and bring the following items with you. You are provided with the application form for the grant application procedure.

If you cannot go to the office to apply for this grant due to your disability, you can send someone close to you to apply. For this, you have to give your signature on the affidavit letter.

  • You must carry your 13-digit barcode, South African identification documents, and birth certificate to apply.
  • The child’s medical diagnosis report confirming the child’s disability is to be carried out.
  • Proof of your marital status.

When he arrives at the office to apply, a SASSA representative will collect all these items from him. After filling out the form, you must submit it to the office, and please collect the receipt.

Eligibility Criteria For Care Dependency Grant

  • If you want to get a Care Dependency Grant for your children, you have to make sure that you are their birth parents. Apart from this, if you have adopted the child, you must provide the adoption letter from the court.
  • They should be a complete resident of South Africa.
  •  If you are alone, your annual income is not more than R 223200.
  •  If you are married, your shared income should not exceed R 446400 annually.​
  • The child must be under 18 years of age.
  •  The child will not be permanently cared for in a state institution.
  •  He must have a severe disability and require full-time and special care.
  •  Both the foster parents and the child must live in South Africa.

How Much Amount Should be Paid By SASSA For Grant?

You will receive R 2090 per month from SASSA to care for your child so that you can use this money to fulfil his other needs. The South African government has decided to increase the amount of this grant up to 10 percent.

Grant Disbursement Process 

The Care Dependency Grant can be paid to you by the SASSA through one of the following methods.

  • The SASSA will fix a particular day for the grant Disbursement on pay-point.
  • Grant Should be deposited into your bank or post bank account on a specified day.
  • Government non-funded organizations will be fixed for grant distribution.

If you cannot collect the money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office or give someone a power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf.

What to Do If Grant Application is Rejected

If your application for the Care Dependency Grant is not approved, SASSA will inform you in writing as to why the application has not been approved. If you disagree with the decision of SASSA.

You can also reconsider the appeal to the Minister for Social Development at the National Office of the Department of Social Development. You must explain in detail why you disagree with this decision. But you must file an appeal within 90 days of grant rejection.

How Much Time Required For Application Approval

Grant application processing usually takes over three months, as many applications are processed simultaneously. Still, your application is sometimes approved within a few weeks, after which you receive the grant.

The amount is disbursed from the day you apply for the grant, so you don’t need to worry. However, the complete procedure and verification of your grant may take more than three months. Only then will the grant be provided to you.

When May the Child’s Grant Suspended

Given below are the circumstances that may lead to suspension of your child’s Care Dependency Grant

  • Using the grant, you and your child’s circumstances change, and you can support the child independently.
  • SASSA reviews your grant. If you are found ineligible in this review, your grant is suspended.
  • In addition, an applicant’s grant may be suspended if they do not cooperate with the review of their grant at the time of the review.
  • If you obtained this grant through fraud and misrepresentation of the child, your grant may be suspended.
  • If you have provided incorrect information during grant approval, your grant may be delayed.
